From our President, Gloria Timmons:
Rogers Johnson was President of the Seacoast NAACP and Chair of the Governor’s Advisory Board for Diversity and Inclusion. He passed away on November 12. He was also a member of the Governor's COVID-19 Equity Response Team and the Governor's Commission on Law Enforcement Accountability, Community, and Transparency.
As head of the Seacoast NAACP, drawing on his many years of experience in state and federal government, he worked tirelessly to bring awareness to the discrimination that occurred in school districts and government agencies. He would spend hours on the phone with those being discriminated against to hear their stories and then provide a platform for those stories to be told.
But he was not just about raising awareness. With warmth and humor, he rolled up his sleeves and worked with officials to help them understand the perspective of people of color, and what could and should be done to reduce the discrimination he saw.
He brought a bi-partisan approach to leading the Governor's Advisory Council for Diversity. His leadership resulted in many recommendations that have been implemented, making NH a better place for minorities.
He was respected across the state because of his work. A major advocate for civil rights and diversity, equity, and inclusion in NH has been lost. But he showed us ways to be effective and would want us to carry on the work.
Arrangements have been completed for Rogers' Home Coming. The funeral service will be private (just for the family).
